What Do Appraisers Have to do With Me?

The information found in this section of the ASA website was designed just for you – consumers of appraisal services – to learn more about appraisals, appraisers and why you should be picky when you decide to hire a professional appraiser. We invite you to explore our FAQs and our Consumer Library for tips on collectibles and much more.

Let’s start with the basics…

What is an appraisal?

An appraisal is a valuation of property provided by a professional appraiser such as those designated by ASA. A professional appraiser will prepare a comprehensive report for their clients which provides his/her opinion of value at a given point in time for any type of property whether it be a business, a diamond, an electricity-generating windmill, a sculpture, a house or more.

Preparing an appraisal involves research, analysis of all pertinent information and the proper experience, knowledge and judgment to make a reasonable and supportable opinion of value.

What is an appraiser?

An appraiser identifies and provides a value for various types of property. Appraisers fall under several categories of appraisal types such as personal property, real property, machinery and technical specialties, appraisal review and management, gems and jewelry and business valuation.

Why choose an ASA-accredited appraiser?

ASA-accredited appraisers provide exceptional valuation expertise as they earn their designations only after completing a rigorous course structure and peer-evaluation process that requires years of study, experience, dedication and commitment. ASA accredited appraisers follow both the professional standards set forth by the Appraisal Foundation and ASA’s own Code of Ethics and Principles of Appraisal Practice to provide a credible, objective opinion of value.
